Apple
30 Years of Mac
Design lead for the apple.com takeover that celebrated the Mac’s first thirty years.
Overview
Thirty years of history, one editorial site
For the Mac’s 30th anniversary, Apple took over apple.com with a scroll-driven timeline pairing each of the Mac’s thirty years with a pioneer who used it to change their field. It closed with Your First Mac, where visitors added their own. The site was one piece of a company-wide celebration that reached Apple’s campus and its stores. I was the Design Lead for the Interactive Graphic Production team in Apple’s Marcom group, working cross-functionally with production designers, developers, content production managers, design program managers, and localization teams to turn the design mocks into a working, coded website. Built responsive, the site scaled from the desktop takeover down to tablet and phone, and the real work was in the details: photo retouching, creative cropping, and the small decisions that kept the editorial layout beautiful at every width.
Impact
On time for the birthday, then everywhere
The site shipped on time for the anniversary, January 24, 2014, launching first in the U.S. My team then trained and supported localization teams across the globe as they brought it to their own markets. The homepage takeover put the Mac’s story in front of every apple.com visitor on its birthday, and the campaign was recognized by The One Show. The site is still there in the Web Archive, exactly as it shipped.
